Who is the Dumbass who decided we should stop calling medicine “potions” and “elixirs”
Actually, both potions and elixirs are a thing.
A potion is a liquid farmaceutical form with an aqueous solvent base, with a complex composition, usually edulcorated and aromatised and containing one or more active compounds/drugs.
An elixir is very similar to a potion but it has an amount of alcohol that can exceed 50%. Some “recipes” for potions elixirs still figure in nowadays pharmacopoeias, the official compendiums for medicine development.
Other funny things you find at official pharmaceutical compendiums:
- medicinal cigarettes
- medicinal chocolates
- oddly specific things like opiate lemonade and opiate lollipops
